Despicable Me 4

Hmm, this was an okay film, watchable and entertaining enough as it went by, but not a patch on the original and completely forgettable. Do we really need to keep making these Despicable movies? I can’t remember the plot even now, something about a school? Genuinely, the minion in the vending machine was the best thing about it.

Minions: The Rise of Gru

Despicable Me and the Minions franchise has been quite a rollercoaster, dipping up and down in quality at the same rate it jumps back and forth in time. This one was a sequel to Minions, but still a prequel to Despicable Me, so I’m not sure some of the activities stack up timeline-wise (the three became kung fu experts and then just never used it ever again?) but hey, let’s not apply logic to these amazing yellow creatures.

There are some great elements, Bratt allowing some fabulous eighties references is great, and I quite enjoyed the juxtaposition between the twin brothers. But actually, not having enough stories means the film relies too heavily on minions being cute, or pigs scattering the land, or the unicorn sub-plot.

I’ve been looking forward to this one from the moment it was announced, being the minion fan that I am. However, there was also so much hype and press about it that I felt like it was familiar right from the off. There were still some nice surprises, particularly the opening intro Pitch Perfect style, but actually it just felt like a nice, comfortable, minion-tastic ninety minutes.

Despite this being an advert (although it’s for free popcorn so who can argue?), it’s worth sharing because the minions get all Christmassy and start singing carols. If you watched their last attempt at singing and were put off, understandably, then do give them a second chance. I’m so glad the minions have their own film coming out, although do wonder if they will be required to communicate better and thus lose just a little bit of their charm.

There was never any doubt that we would watch this one, as the first film was an instant hit in our household. My recent blog header would indicate as much, with minions becoming a firm favourite of mine. We had to wait until my exams had finished, partly because I wanted to use the film as a treat for getting through it, and partly because I knew I couldn’t cope with the minion-ness until I was done!

Another film that made us laugh a significant amount! We were both in need of something simple and amusing, and this was both of those. I would say it doesn’t have the multi-layer elements that make a kids film really something special, but if you just want to zone out in front of the TV for 90 minutes, it’s perfect.
