Wimbledon 2026, week 2

Wimbledon 2026 is almost at its conclusion, and as I’m less interested in the men’s final than I should be, I’m happy to draw a line under it for this year before we have crowned both champions. It’s been brilliant, for me much better than last year and with plenty of intrigue throughout. I wrote in my first week roundup about how many seeds were falling by the wayside and that set us up for a fascinating second week.

  • Last year, I took the whole of the second week off work and was a bit annoyed by the end because I wasn’t interested in anyone that was left. This year, I went back to work mid-week and was annoyed because there were matches I was still interested in. Turns out, you can’t predict what’s going to happen and whatever you do, it will be the wrong choice!
  • The men’s side is as I suspected, Sinner vs Zverev and I have a preference for who wins but I certainly don’t want to watch anymore of the German than I already have. Him taking out Fery was a certainty but what a run the Brit had. I hope he can shore this up with more results to follow so that it’s not just a one off flash of brilliance.
  • On the women’s side, I was hooked. The two semi-finals were vastly different, and that tie-break between Gauff and Muchova was outstanding. I do think Gauff should have won, Muchova looked spent, but I was glad it went the way it did. I wanted Muchova for the title but even with the blip in the second set of the Ladies’ Final, it was Noskova’s all the way.
  • I had also hoped Kostyuk could get to the final, because she’s been a revelation recently, but losing out to the eventual champion is no bad thing. And what I would have done with a Muchova/Kostyuk final, I have no clue.
  • I had hoped to get more into some of the other competitions going on - the doubles didn’t grab me at all this year, but maybe some of the juniors or the invitations. It’s nice seeing familiar faces on the court - Anne Keothavong was a treat, and Hewitt, and Bouchard - but I only watched a couple of matches. I guess by then I had a little bit of tennis fatigue after three solid weeks of focusing on the grass. But of course, give it a couple of days and I’ll be missing it!

I’ve really loved the grass court swing and it’s got me invested in tennis again where I had drifted away of late. Lots of stories brewing - the new faces we’ve seen, the battle for number one on the ladies’, the impact of Alcaraz’s return and so much more. The trouble is not having access to any of the other tournaments whereas it used to be a permanent fixture on my TV screens. Until someone wrestles control away from Sky, I don’t see that changing for me. Meanwhile, it’s not really that long until we start focusing on the US Open and who can do well on the hard courts.
