Avengers: Age of Ultron

Lots of mixed feelings about this one. It was, of course, brilliant but definitely not perfect. For a start, the story had me very confused. It felt like a Transformers movie - long, confusing, sort of in two parts, and many times I wasn’t entirely sure what was going on. There was also a lot of references and characters dipping in and out, which is part of the joy of the Marvel Universe, I know, but made it very hard work when I couldn’t remember or place half of them.

Guardians of the Galaxy

Like most of the Marvel Universe fans, I wasn’t sure about the Guardians. Hadn’t heard of any of them, and my tolerance for the more off-the-wall things isn’t as high as it probably should be. When everyone suddenly said it was the best film ever, that raised my spirits, and seeing as we were always going to watch it anyway, I couldn’t wait.

From Heartbreak High to Captain America

While we were watching the Captain America sequel recently, there was one face that I felt like I recognised but couldn’t quite place. Don’t you just hate it when that happens? So distracting. This time, it was one of the S.H.I.E.L.D. henchmen, in it every so often but not exactly a big part. I’m not even sure it was a speaking part. It turns out this is Callan Mulvey, who used to be Drazic in Heartbreak High. Drazic! In Captain America!

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

I wasn’t hugely looking forward to this one, Captain America turns out not to be my favourite of the Marvel characters introduced so far and I couldn’t remember huge amounts of the first film. I think it lived up to my expectations. It was an entertaining enough film with all the good Marvel things you come to love - inside jokes and references, nice witty dialogue and plenty of action along the way.

Thor: The Dark World

Thor: The Dark World

As with all the Marvel films, the dialogue was fun, there were a few laughs throughout, and the best part was seeing the characters interact with each other and try to deal with a world in which they don’t really fit. Darcy was fab, and I loved bonus Chris O’Dowd (underused). Unfortunately, there didn’t seem to be enough story to go with it. Christopher Eccleston made a good bad guy, but it didn’t really feel like the world was in jeopardy, even in the big showdown.

Loved it. I was so wrong about the trailer, we had more of Tony Stark’s awesome wit, alongside some rather more vulnerable moments as well. Trevor was brilliant, and having a rather more human enemy (if enhanced in a terrifying fashion) was good to bring Tony back down from ‘what happened in New York.’ I would have rolled my eyes at the involvement of a kid, normally, but they handled it well and there was some great dialogue between the two. All in all, a success, and the two hours absolutely flew by which is a sign of a really good film.

Trailer Tuesday - Bears making a getaway

The trailers I am so not sure where I stand on this trailer for Getaway - it looks good and intriguing but I just don’t understand why someone would want someone to drive quite so much. Also, I’m not sure what kind of goody-two-shoes Disney persona Selena ever had, but she’s shedding it quickly.

Avengers Assemble

Ohhh, it was so good! The story was great, but that didn’t even matter. It wasn’t about what was happening really, it was about who it was happening too. The piece is all about these misfits, coming together and having to figure out how to work together to save the world. Loki could have had a much smaller part and it would have worked just as well. There are so many bits to love, so many great lines, so many jokes where they just aren’t taking themselves too seriously. It’s beautifully done.

Captain America: The First Avenger

It was good, I really quite liked it. My big concern is that the character works incredibly well in the 1940s setting, but I’m not so sure I’m going to like the character in the present day. It was all so very Forever Young, albeit much less corny. It was much better than Hulk, and just better than Thor.

Again, similar to Thor, it was better than I thought it was going to be but I do think it was the weakest of the ones we have seen so far. I liked that all the back story was gone before the opening credits were over, instead of dragging it all out in the sloooow fashion we have come to expect. There was a lot of chasing and running, which meant we never had time to get to know Bruce Banner.

I liked it a lot more than I thought I was going to. It was very beautiful and well done - the characters seemed good and interacted well together, although I didn’t really find myself connecting with any of them. In fact, I felt most sorry for Loki and he was meant to be the bad guy. It was a good way to spend a couple of hours, and I’m glad that the Avengers business made us watch it, but I wasn’t completely sold on Thor in the same vein as other comic book heroes.

Iron Man 2

A great sequel, I reckon. Almost instantly we were reminded of how fabulous the Tony Stark character is and I remembered how much I wanted to just watch a film of him going about his day to day business. Having said that, I did think that there was more time to revel in the character in the first movie, whereas this second one had more of a story - or more characters, at least - to pack in.

Really quite liked it. It being directed by Favreau was a surprise but I think he did a fabulous job. It was a bit long, but thankfully it wasn’t too drawn out - as quite a lot of these ‘how they became who they are’ stories can be (see: Batman, Bond). I loved the character, I know he was meant to be not very likeable to begin with, and his choice of career is questionable, but I wasn’t lying when I said I could watch a whole film of the rich guy just doing what he does.
