Thoughts
It was somewhere between watching Iron Man 2, and renting Captain America, that we suddenly discovered the whole Avengers thing. That meant Mr America had to sit and wait while we consumed everything we’d missed, but eventually we got round to it. Mr C and I can’t remember whether we were going to watch this one anyway, regardless of any Avengers connection, but I think we were, although we weren’t convinced it was going to be good.
It was good, I really quite liked it. My big concern is that the character works incredibly well in the 1940s setting, but I’m not so sure I’m going to like the character in the present day. It was all so very Forever Young, albeit much less corny. It was much better than Hulk, and just better than Thor.
I did like that there was a perfect opportunity to deploy The Rage, but they didn’t. It says a lot, though, that I really was more excited by Stark’s dad, and the Expo and all that, than the actual Captain America story. His body change was very well done, boggled my mind just a little bit. You might have noticed.
Revisited - March 2021
Definitely first time round I was a bit put off by Cap’s goody-two-shoes 1940s style, but it’s interesting that I didn’t think he would work in the modern era. I think the character only gets better and more fascinating - bringing those old school ideals to the modern fights. Particularly interacting with the others, and of course being one half of the big Civil War against Tony.
It’s a good origin story movie, this one, but I do think the best stuff for the Captain comes later.
