Eurovision Song Contest 2026

Last year’s Eurovision seemed like it had taken a bit too much of a turn towards a credible singing contest, losing some of that quirkiness that makes it the institution that it is. This year, things were a bit more nutty, which is exactly what I’m looking for. Hilariously, I’ve read criticisms of the UK performance, saying we really should try harder and not send novelty acts. I mean, I would say the last couple of years we have had ‘proper’ songs, even if they weren’t actually very good, and that hasn’t done us any favours. Why shouldn’t we try something a bit more quirky? As soon as I heard Look Mum No Computer, I knew it was a Eurovision entry. I wasn’t expecting great things but I thought we might have got a bit more than one point. Oh well, roll on next year.

Eurovision Song Contest 2025

Eurovision Song Contest 2025

For the last few years, I’ve tuned in to the Eurovision Song Contest with some trepidation… thinking I’ll watch just a bit and then it will probably be boring and I’ll end up going to bed early with a good book instead. That hasn’t happened, each year is entertaining in its own right, and 2025 was no different. I did think the show was lacking something, that unique camp-ness that makes Eurovision the juggernaut that it is seemed missing. Most of the entries were credible and well performed and pretty sensible, with just a couple showing that quirkiness that we know and love.

Eurovision 2024 - Finding the right balance

It feels like every year I go into the Eurovision song contest thinking, meh, I’ll watch a bit, see if it grabs me, but I’m really not that bothered this time round. Almost like moving the twenty minute rule from my film watching into the song contest arena as well. I can’t quite believe it’s been two years since Sam Ryder, and I pretty much just want to relive that year over and over instead.

Liverpool's Eurovision party

Last year, I, along with a lot of other people, watched in joy and awe as Ukraine won the Eurovision Song Contest, closely followed by the UK with our best performance in a good long time. I’d actually sworn off Eurovision for a bit, despite being a fan since before I can remember. I’ve had, and still have, an issue with the scoring but I won’t get into all that again. Last year’s contest brought me right back into the Eurovision fold and I was excited for this year to roll around.

Thoughts on Eurovision's new revision

The Eurovision Song Competition this weekend was a fun evening of drinking wine and watching a variety of singing acts doing their thing, but despite the enjoyment of the evening, it left me a little flat. I thought at first it was because a serious song had won the whole thing. Portugal’s guy was clearly very talented but it didn’t really feel in the spirit of Eurovision – this is a competition about sassy gorillas and yodelling rappers after all.

It irks me when songs have both English and their native language in there. Pick one and stick to it.

Eurovision tradition

Eurovision tradition

Every year since I was allowed to stay up that late, I’ve watched the Eurovision with my mother. One year, my friend was staying over and we watched it together. We all were allowed one vote and had a fabulous time laughing at all the entries and deciding which one was going to be worthy of our vote. Last year, my parents were on holiday in this area, and I went and watched it with them in their hotel room - so anxious was I to keep up the tradition.

I’m feeling kinda good about myself today, my hair is behaving - that helps. Mr C and I watched the Eurovision together last night, and I got a bit drunk while we were watching. Way to go UK - nil point! I missed my mother a lot while we were watching it because it’s sort of a family tradition that we watch it together. Perhaps we’ll just have to start a new tradition.
