Strictly Come Dancing 2023, Week 3 thoughts
Published October 9, 2023

Movie week! Disney celebrations. Incredible costumes. And lovely AMY!! Overwhelming and we’re only minutes in. Let’s go!
Nigel & Katya - Jive (Batman)
I like the glitterball bat signal but I do not like this dance. I guess expectations were high as Nigel’s been so good for two weeks but this just wasn’t his dance. The kicking wasn’t great, and there were quite a few mistakes. He wasn’t put off by them though and the character was good. The judge’s comments were surprisingly positive, although agree it did get better as it went on.
Angela & Kai - Quickstep (The Sound of Music)
“Today was a momentous day in training, we had the first ever triple knickers.”
Not sure I’m totally comfortable seeing Kai’s knees if I’m honest. A lovely dance, not technically the best, I think, but a really good effort and looked like she was loving it.
Zara & Graziano - Paso Doble (Puss in Boots)
I don’t know Puss in Boots and don’t have a huge desire to see it, but it’s nice they have an actual dance in the film to reference. Her walking around the floor did just seem like walking, but the character and anger came across well. “My cats are watching.” No, Z, they’re not, they are cats.
Layton & Nikita - Viennese Waltz (Grease)
Amazing, professional again. Everyone wants to be Rizzo, right? Smooth and gliding, I think? Could have watched that all day. Anton and Shirley doing a demonstration, we want more of that, please. Craig didn’t like it, I’m surprised!
Angela & Carlos - Charleston (Damn Yankees)
Most iconic dance scene in a film? I’ve never heard of it! But this was so good! Great swivels. Think it lost a bit of cohesion towards the end but the start was amazing, hitting the beats, good character, great Charleston. I don’t think much of the song, but she knocked it out of the park!
Amanda & Giovanni - Rumba (Bridget Jones’s Diary)
Great dance, not too cringey for a rumba, although it was a bit in places. She looks very different as a blond! I thought there might have been a couple of balance issues, but even I think a 6 from Craig is undermarked.
Nikita & Gorka - Jive (Charleston)
I feel like this is the first time in a while we’ve seen someone let being in the dance off really affect their confidence - in the training footage, Nikita didn’t look like she was enjoying herself at all. I think this was a difficult dance to follow up with as it had the same problem as last week, very flat and not bouncy. And the choreography was so simple. The judges seemed to be being quite careful, understandably.
Ellie & Vito - Viennese Waltz (Encanto)
Hula hoop-gate. Really good, the spin out of hold and back into hold was good. From start to finish, it was just an engaging and confident performance. Vito keeping a book of judge’s comments, little swot in the corner.
Bobby & Dianne - Samba (Romeo & Juliet)
Samba feels a bit incongruous with the Shakespeare subject matter, but it’s a great song. His hips were going crazy, not sure they’re always doing the right thing but you can’t fault the effort! Transitions not perfect but not a lot wrong with it. Anton called it a trick pelvis!
Jody & Jowita - American Smooth (Up)
Down on training due to injury. Viennese Waltz, nice dance, simple, gentle, good performance. Not perfect technique but amazing for what must have only been a couple of days of practice.
Eddie & Karen - Couple’s Choice (Men in Black)
I love this song. It was great, suited him, at first I thought he looked slightly less confident than last week, but maybe not. Karen looked like she was having a great time. Reminded me of Oti and Bill, two people street dancing in suits. It definitely was too early for that 10 from Shirley, though.
Annabel & Johannes - Waltz (Breakfast at Tiffany’s)
Strict side of Johannes in training. It was going really well, but then a bit of a mistake towards the end and a few missteps that followed. But they kept it going and it was lovely to watch. She does look like Darcey Bussel, as Craig referenced. Her face when Craig gave an 8.
Adam & Luba - Jive (The Super Mario Bros. Movie)
Why is Luba not the princess? It’s not great. Quite laboured, and the kicks and flicks aren’t good. He’s giving good character and I can see he’s putting effort in but it’s not quite working. He is cute as Mario, though, and his enthusiasm is infectious.
Krishnan & Lauren - Charleston (Cabaret)
Krishnan saying Lauren shouting at him was great because it replaced the voice in his earpiece - so interesting! It was pretty good, swivels amazing, energy, character, all good! Not a perfect Charleston and not many impressive lifts (although epic splits from Lauren) but really good! I spotted the missed beat but he was so good at picking it back up.
Angela was top of the leaderboard this week, with Eddie and Ellie tapping at her heels. At the other end, Jody (who presumably gets some sympathy votes for having a difficult week), Nikita, Zara and Nigel (surprising).
I don’t very often get my predictions right but I’ve been calling for Zara and Nikita as the dance off pair for a couple of weeks and I had to get it right eventually. Out of the two of them it had to be Nikita going, which is a shame because I think she was definitely growing in confidence but the two similar dances week on week just didn’t do her any favours.
Anyway, another week and thirteen couples remaining to entertain us. Let’s go!
