A drop of wine

Earlier this year, Apple TV+ released Drops of God, a multi-lingual series set in the serious world of wine-tasting. I’ve just wrapped up watching the series, and I want to write about it but I don’t really know where to begin.
It took a while to start watching, and a while to get into it, and it wasn’t a priority series so it took longer than expected to complete the eight episodes. But every time I watched an episode, I absolutely loved it, even though I can’t put my finger on why.
The series is based on a manga comic, in which two Japanese characters do battle in some wine-related testing to gain ownership of a famous wine collection as part of a family legacy. In the TV show, one of the characters has been changed to a French woman, so we were nipping across the globe between France and Japan, and dipping in and out of languages all over the place.
In the series, our two heroes are pitted head to head in a series of three tests to gain an inheritance, whilst also dealing with their own respective family issues - Camille coming to terms with the passing of her long-estranged father and reigniting wine-tasting skills, and Issei learning surprising secrets about his buttoned-up family as he goes against their wishes.
It sounds bonkers, and honestly, if you dive even further into the storylines, it is. But it was also funny and engaging, and interesting (I mean, you wouldn’t think watching characters sipping at wine and spitting it out again could be entertaining but it was!) and ultimately, intriguing as to who would win the tests and how it was all going to work out in the end.
I absolutely recommend giving this show a go, it came and went with little fanfare on Apple TV+ and it’s hard to pinpoint exactly what audience it’s aimed at. But it’s good, even if I can’t quite tell you why.
