Experience survival horror like never before in the 8th major installment in the Resident Evil franchise - Resident Evil Village. With detailed graphics, intense first-person action and masterful storytelling, the terror has never felt more realistic.

I always like the idea of Resident Evil related media more than the actual experience of them - I thought the first movie was great but since then I’m not so sure. However, this latest game is Playstation level graphics available on the iPhone with the added bonus of playing through some of the early scenes for free before having to commit to purchasing the full game. Which is lucky, as you will see.

It’s in the Game

I’ll be upfront about it, I didn’t enjoy the playthrough of the first few scenes in this game. As always, the graphics were incredible and the atmosphere really well done. I didn’t like the first person dynamic in play here, I’m not sure whether that’s a general personal taste or specific to this game though - more research required.

And then the early moments, every time you look down there was a terrifyingly realistic baby looking back at you. And then after some lengthy storytelling, you’re out in the snow and wilderness with not a lot of clues about which way to go. I wandered around in the cold and dark, feeling tense, for far too long. Forgive me, but that’s not so much fun.

I did think approaching the village that it was going more in the direction of Tomb Raider, time to walk round and round and find your way. Extensive maps to explore are fun when you can actually see where you’re going. But then the terror started and the man was dragged through the roof and I was out. I’m such a wimp!

Thoughts

If you like Resident Evil and the horror genre, plus first person gameplay, I think this is going to be right up your street. It wasn’t for me, but I continue to be impressed with what the iPhone can deliver.
