I’ve not played Cut the Rope before although I’ve seen it in passing as it has been quite a phenomenon in the past. It’s the kind of game that I do enjoy so I don’t know why I haven’t indulged before. This time it popped up as a new game on Apple Arcade, so there was no harm in diving in and seeing if cutting the rope actually was my cup of tea or not. I tried the game on both the iPhone and the Apple TV - there’s no controller support on the Apple TV and you have to use the remote which is not at all an instinctive or comfortable position, so iPhone for me all the way.
It’s in the Game
The premise of this is simple, and it’s one of those logic/physics puzzles where the little green one is swinging on various ropes and you want to link or cut them in the right way to allow him to pick up as many of the three available stars as possible, before reuniting him with the bigger green thing. There are various levels that get harder as you go along and have new and interesting things to interact with that can either help or hinder your progress.
I did find it to be a lot of fun but only in small doses. It couldn’t hold my attention for a long time, but I did like to dip into the game every now and again to play a level and check in with the Noms. It’s one of those games that is exactly designed for that as each level only takes a few seconds to play, either you get it right first time, or you mess it up and if you have time you can go again, or you can put it down to come back to later.
It’s perfect on the iPhone for the swiping, the graphics, and even the shape of the platforms, and there are plenty of levels to get stuck into - although I would think probably not enough for die hard fans.
Thoughts
This is a fun game that has cute characters and really good animations. The physics puzzles are just the right amount of challenging to keep it interesting while still being ultimately doable. I did find some of the cut scenes a bit annoying, and as mentioned, trying to play this on anything other than a phone isn’t going to work, but ultimately a good game to have installed to while away a few minutes waiting for the bus.
