Romantic comedy starring Sandra Bullock as Margaret Tate, a tyrannical business executive on the brink of deportation from the United States back to her homeland of Canada. Margaret coerces her young assistant Andrew into marrying her so that she can stay in the country and he can stay in his job. In order to keep up the facade, Margaret must now endure a trip to Alaska to meet her future in-laws.

Thoughts
Whilst browsing through the rental options, Mr C and I discovered this romantic comedy. The trailer sold it to us, quite literally, as we couldn’t wait for the rental to come out. I’m a closet Sandra Bullock fan, and Mr C is a closet rom-com fan. Win-win.
Loved it. For a romantic comedy, it wasn’t completely predictable, they were both really funny, and the island dynamic was brilliant. I would watch it again, because even the mushy bits weren’t too gross.
Revisited - February 2015
Recovering from wisdom teeth removal can be painful but they say that laughter is the best medicine, so I was keen to rewatch as many comedies as possible. I remembered liking this one but I certainly don’t remember it being as good as it was. From the start, I like that there’s barely a stereotype - only the early film Sandra who is uptight and a scary boss. Otherwise we’ve got a male assistant, a fabulously cheeky grandma, a family struggling to reconcile when the child doesn’t want to do what’s expected of him.
There was more slapstick than I remember, the bit with the dog and falling overboard on the boat. There was also far more nudity than I remembered, but you couldn’t get two prettier people to do so. I watched this first time round when I was still hard-hearted, hence the mushy comment up above. In reality, now I have mellowed, it’s not mushy at all, it’s got the perfect amount of family warmth alongside romantic drama with two great leads.
The film really stood up on a second viewing after such a long time, it’s a proper favourite.
