Film info

  • Title Miss Potter
  • Director Chris Noonan
  • Year 2006
  • Run time 1hr 28m
  • Genres Romance, Drama, Family
  • Tagline The life of Beatrix Potter is the most enchanting tale of all

The dowdy, fanciful Beatrix Potter is in her thirties and still living with her parents in London who'd like to see her married off. She shows no inclination to marry, despite a stream of young men beating a path to her socialite parents' door to pitch woo. Withdrawn and unusual, Miss Potter prefers instead to immerse herself in the world of the animals she draws and writes about, including Peter Rabbit and Jemima Puddleduck. She finally puts together enough illustrations to fill a book and Norman, the man the publisher assigns to the project, quickly falls in love with her. Soon the contrary Miss Potter's life is turned around but, typically, her uppity parents disapprove vociferously of Norman and Beatrix is forced to choose between her family and her great love.

1:02 My dad used to sharpen pencils with a knife. I loved how wonky they were.
4:31 They don’t look all that impressed.
6:49 She must be quite rich to have a woman following her about, and a coach and horses.
7:43 It is odd they let coaches in the park, a bit like letting cars in there now. No chance.
13:57 She is very demanding for a brand new publisher. I like it.
19:15 Hehe, posh people that say “orf” instead of “off” make me chuckle.
21:58 I like his scarf - I am obsessed with scarves at the moment.
23:46 Why is that woman wearing a tie?
26:03 I would like to have been a kept woman until the age of 32.
28:42 So, does he really like her stories, or does he just like her?
37:42 Is playing cards not really a girl thing then?
40:29 Mr McGregor is singing again.
43:33 I always worry about ladies standing next to fires, in case their giant skirts catch fire.
47:05 Aw, bless them. Amazingly, that is some sentimental bit that I don’t find disagreeable.
54:54 If he proposed to me I would only think about it if he promised to get rid of the crazy moustache.
1:00:42 Oh dear, he didn’t grow up to look like that? Boo. That’s the guy from Monarch of the Glen.
1:03:09 They make the journey seem very quick, but I bet it was agony.
1:08:39 She was ever so slightly crazy beforehand. I don’t suppose grief will help.
1:12:23 How do you grow a beard like that? So very fluffy.
1:14:43 Ms Zellweger has very bony hands.
1:18:11 Yay, pigs. Every film should have piglets in, I say.
1:19:42 £1,000 for a farm? I don’t understand.
1:24:24 I didn’t know Beatrix Potter did all that stuff with the land. How amazingly generous.

Thoughts

I didn’t even know there was a film about Beatrix Potter, I’ve read the books and didn’t really like them and I’m not the biggest fan of Renée, but this was free on the iPlayer and I thought I would give it a go.

Surprisingly, this was much better than I thought. It reminded my of that TV documentary about Enid Blyton. Slow and moving, emotional and telling the simple story of someone’s life and how that translated into the work they produced. Still not a fan of Renée but this was good.
