| 1:46 | Literally a 78 page plan before they were even born. I dunno, man. |
| 7:09 | I like that they hang up their own motivational signs. |
| 13:58 | “Venus and Serena, they gonna shake up this world.” |
| 19:24 | There are lots of siblings in tennis actually, but I’d never considered the odds of having two amazing champions as siblings. |
| 26:37 | Is pool in the front of the house a crazy thing? |
| 29:22 | That guy REALLY looks like Pete Sampras. |
| 31:48 | “I’d like other people to want to play like me.” |
| 37:07 | What is the point of badgering a coach to take on your girls if you’re just going to interfere? |
| 45:16 | She is doing a lot of Venus’ mannerisms, love it. |
| 58:59 | “At least they got them on tape this time.” If only that made a difference. |
| 1:07:32 | “Don’t mistake my silence for agreement.” Love Oracene. |
| 1:20:15 | I don’t get this guy. Ignoring all the experts. They succeeded despite him, surely. |
| 1:39:49 | Phew, she gets to play! |
| 1:51:46 | “Go on, take that in. You’re up next.” |
| 1:57:23 | The little ball holder thing on the back is so weird. |
Thoughts
It’s Wimbledon fortnight so completely understandable that this popped back up on the iPlayer. It’s been on my list to watch for a while but I’m left a bit nonplussed by the whole thing. The story of Serena and Venus absolutely deserves a retelling but why is the focus of this on the dad? He played his part, sure, but they’re the ones doing the work and breaking down the fences. Not sure if it was the intention but the film definitely made me wonder how much more they could have achieved if he hadn’t been so obstructive.
As a film, it’s fine, it’s well made, it tells the story, it does the job, but the subject matter just needed a lot more thought.
