Time Comment
4:40 Already SO in love with the accents.
6:46 “Sixty euro?” “Fuck off.” “Eighteen euro.”
10:23 He’s not wrong about how much dedication you need to play the guitar.
16:55 “If you don’t want me here, why do I have to be back at 9?” Great question.
19:19 Yay for bonus guitar lessons within a movie.
25:41 “That’s not an acceptable song.” I mean, I don’t think James Blunt is as bad as everyone says but it’s no one’s favourite song, surely?
29:42 I’m not sure I would start with C but like his inspo teaching.
37:17 “You presumed. But then I let you.”
42:00 I think other films should be banned from using this song, Coda wrapped it up thank you.
46:51 Dublin 07!!!
56:33 “Do it better and I’ll loop it.”
1:03:55 If you listen to too much dance music, you don’t know what a bridge is!
1:06:45 “Who’s going to cancel you? You’re already no one.”
1:20:32 It is hard when she just started making the connection with him.
1:28:57 Amazing multi-country band!

Thoughts

There’s a lot of expectation going into a John Carney movie - he’s done such good stuff in the past, with Begin Again and Once, even Sing Street. This is right up there with the good ones - gorgeous Irish people living difficult lives and trying to connect with each other through the medium of music.

Eve Hewson continues to be absolutely brilliant. She’s come such a long way from some of the early TV I’ve seen her in, but Bad Sisters and now this - she’s really smashing it. I didn’t care so much about the JGL character but I did like the theories about music he shared. It turns out this was a more theoretical movie than a musical one, because the songs weren’t that great and certainly not at all memorable.

But small complaints for another hit by Carney.
