Pixar's Oscar-winning and wonderfully life-affirming animation centres on Miguel Rivera, a music-loving youngster who dreams of more than small-town Mexico life and following in his family's shoe-making traditions. His idol is Ernesto de la Cruz, a legendary late pop star to whom he may in fact be related. Could Ernesto and his disgraced great-great-grandfather - a vagabond musician who walked out on a young wife and infant daughter - be one and the same? Finding answers means magically journeying to the Land of the Dead, where skinny mutt Dante and skeleton scallywag Hector come along for the ride.

Thoughts

If we hadn’t suddenly decided to work through all the Pixar movies that we’ve missed, I don’t know if we’d ever have watched and boy - what a shame that would have been. It was a bit of a rollercoaster watching this movie, because initially, it seemed like a nice, charming family story about music, happy to watch it.

Then everyone turned into living skeletons and there was a whole other place over the bridge where the skeletons spent their time and I was mentally checking out at that point. But kept watching because I sort of wanted to see what happened and omg, then there were amazing twists and turns that I would never have predicted and so much emotion… it turned into a fantastic movie!

The only lingering question I have is why it’s called Coco, because although she is the one that’s supposed to do the remembering, she really doesn’t play a big role in the film at all.
