Brothers Harry and Jack leave Manchester for New York City for their annual weekend getaway. But upon arrival, they find a silent, deserted JFK, where the few ground crew they can spot have all been slaughtered. Harry and Jack are military veterans, but they’ve never encountered anything like this. As they witness the carnage and stumble across murderous madmen in a post-apocalyptic New York City, it becomes clear that escape is the only option—that is, if there is anywhere sane to escape to...

Thoughts

There are quite a few things to like about this book. It’s no-nonsense, straight to the story, and as fast-paced as it’s possible to be. There’s not a lot of time for character development, except a brief paragraph of backstory for the main two. Everything else you learn along the way.

It’s a dystopian novel, some catastrophic event has happened that turns people against each other and wipes out plenty of the population. It’s all about survival, getting through each day alive, and figuring out what the dastardly plot is. It zips along at a frantic pace which just ups the feeling of jeopardy, and of course the twists and turns keep you guessing.

It didn’t draw me in as much as I hoped though, and the fact that we only know these characters for such a brief amount of time means it’s not always the end of the world when they don’t make it to the next chapter. It all ends on a huge cliffhanger, so don’t read this unless you’re prepared to invest in book two as well!
