Knit bits - The shrinking jumper
Published February 22, 2026
Way back towards the beginning of my knitting journey, I mentioned that I was making a jumper but then put it aside to focus on other things. I did finish that jumper, and I don’t know why I didn’t write about it at the time because it was hilarious. I was proud of it, a finished product, hooray! But it was enormous. I’ve not really invested too much time in gauging my work so far, which is a lesson I’ve learned now. But back then, I just had some chunky wool and a pattern and I wanted to crack on.
I don’t have a good picture of the original incarnation of this jumper, but it looked like a dress even on Mr C, who is not short. It was wonderful for snuggling into when the temperature dropped, or if you weren’t feeling well and needed to huddle up on the sofa with a hot drink. But it was silly and impractical, and so I thought it was worth a second go.
I’m trying to curtail my yarn buying at the moment, so instead of getting some more wool, I unwound the existing jumper and then started over again using the same pattern but with smaller counts.

It’s still on the big size but a much more sensible and wearable over-size jumper. It’s a bit ragged in places, where I have unravelled the wool and reused it, but it’s that kind of jumper anyway - not for wearing to posh events, but for keeping warm in your house in winter. I love it.
