Task or treat

A still from the two part Taskmaster New Year Treat featuring Big Zuu, Jill Scott, Sam Ryder, Suzie Dent and Rose Ayling-Ellis

This year’s Taskmaster New Year Treat was a two-parter, the first time the festive special has been extended from one hour, and both parts were absolutely brilliant. The New Year episodes tend to feature a cast that aren’t comedians, and this time we had Big Zuu, Jill Scott, Sam Ryder, Suzie Dent and Rose Ayling-Ellis - a dream cast.

The tasks included rolling some dice, finding a big ted, painting self-portraits and doing tasks in and out of order. There were a variety of skills on display, and as always, you learn something new about the cast in the way they approach the challenges. And it’s hilarious all the way through.

I did wonder if the idea to have a two-parter was a bit more calculating than just having an abundance of great tasks to air. Could it be that they are testing the waters of having non-comedians doing more than just one off episodes? They must surely be running out of comedians willing to do this show now, 20 series in. The cast of the 21st series are locked and loaded, but how many more can run and run?

You could end up with a situation like Strictly, in which the festive team are tested and if they do a good job or are well received, they can be promoted to a full series next time round.

There have been only a couple of contestants over the years that I think push the boundaries of comedian - Richard Osman, Alice Levine and Victoria Coren-Mitchell spring immediately to mind. They were all excellent, though, so why not include more personalities and spread the boundaries a bit? You can still keep the specials for real ’treat’ contestants: Shirley Ballas, Mo Farah, Hannah Fry - these are people who likely aren’t going to do a full series and are worth saving for a special occasion.

I completely trust Alex Horne to steer the show in the right direction, and maybe there still are a hundred potential comedian contestants out there. Either way, I’ll be watching until the tasks run out!
