The Prince in the pub

Eugene Levy and Prince William walk and talk during filming of the Apple TV series The Reluctant Traveller

You’ll have seen it by now, I’m sure, when Eugene Levy met Prince William as part of his travel show The Reluctant Traveller. This Apple TV show began life by putting Eugene out of his comfort zone, as someone who didn’t really like travelling or care much about broadening his horizons. Three series in and his outlook has changed, so each episode is more just an exploration of a different place, a different culture, with Eugene’s thoughts layered on top.

Supposedly a London-centric episode, the fourth outing in season three sees Eugene take a city tour, stay in an offensively posh hotel, and spend most of his time meeting Prince William, heir to the throne. It’s such a good episode, with some surprising honesty from the Royal, and some excellent questions from Eugene, who must have been a bit star-struck, no?

They had a tour of Windsor Castle together, with Eugene struggling to understand the juxtaposition of such grand living quarters alongside family life. They went for a walk through the grounds with William’s two dogs. And they ended up in a pub where our future King opted for a cider, just noting that for if you ever end up having to buy a round.

Things we learned: that William travels around the expansive grounds of his various properties on a scooter, but he’s still always late for things. That he’s had a really difficult year but putting his family first and foremost has helped navigate everything thrown at them. That he’s eyeing up change for the monarchy in the future - not massive change, but making sure the Royals are fit for purpose and making things better.

What I really learned is that he seems to have a good head on his shoulders. It’s totally understandable and infuriating to consider the royals and their position in society - lots of pressure, lots of media intrusion but untold wealth and privilege at the same time. I feel like Prince William has the right ideas and does good, and would do even more good when he gets to the throne. Maybe then I would be able to accept that we have a King rather than a Queen. Maybe.
