Seafront singers

Published October 12, 2025

I always love going to the coast, and what’s better than combining a trip to the seaside with a spot of musical theatre at the same time? Weymouth Pavilion was the setting for this adventure, a glorious theatre that is right on the seafront, overlooking some choppy waters. They were definitely choppy when I was there as the wind had picked right up. As the winter night drew in, the multi-coloured lights on the theatre came on and it was a sight to behold.

Meanwhile, inside, Lee Mead was taking to the stage with three friends as part of his The Phantoms tour. The irony being, of course, that Lee Mead has never been in Phantom of the Opera. His co-stars have, though, and together they sing their way through a variety of musical songs, a hodge-podge of musical theatre including the classics Phantom, Les Miserables and Joseph (of course, given Mead’s history).

The singing is brilliant, three male voices that blend together amazingly well, plus incredible vocals from the female guest who wasn’t in the first half enough, really, but made up for it in the second. There’s a bit of banter along the way, less cringey than is usually the case with this stuff, and often quite funny. They seemed to be having a really good time anyway, and enjoying working together.

It’s a really quality show, and I’m not sure if it’s Lee Mead doing a UK tour as a way of auditioning for the Phantom, but if it is, it’s a sell-out way of doing it!
