The right ratio

A marketing photo for Richard Hammond’s Ratio Gin with a quote from the man himself: “…a celebration of craftsmanship, nature, and the simple joy of good company.”

Until I saw the DriveTribe video, I didn’t realise that Richard Hammond was working on his own gin - but, of course, it makes perfect sense. Hammond has long been a gin drinker, enjoying the tipple in many episodes of Top Gear and The Grand Tour. And when James May created his line of gin, Hammond was first in line to do the taste testing. As I wrote previously, he seemed to be very interested in the details of the gin-making process, so this next step was always going to happen.

Of course I had to give the new gin a try, and was pretty impressed with the results. I’m no gin aficionado, but I know what I like and this one was very nice. It didn’t have as strong or unique a flavour profile as May’s offerings, but it goes very well with a simple tonic to create a smooth drinking experience.

It’s a really nice bottle, and there are videos describing quite how much detail went into creating this - it’s worth it, because I do pick gins based on the bottle more than anything else. It’s modelled on a gear, and I do think the logo is genius. Hammond has also created a whiskey to go alongside the gin, but that’s not my tipple of choice so I’ll leave that to experts to review.

It’s not cheap, but it’s a good gin and definitely worth a look if you’re in the mood for a treat.
