Farewell Chandler

A browser window set to stream the series Friends on HBO, with a magnified section on the title of the show and a brief description

It’s so sad that Matthew Perry has died. Friends is such an integral part of my life, and of course it’s not going anywhere, but now it just has that extra layer of sadness and nostalgia that I wasn’t quite ready for.

I recently read his autobiography which shared difficult but important stories about addiction, alongside lots of stories from his career. Perry did far more than Friends, obviously, but that’s the one that means the most to me. With that in mind, here are my five favourite moments from ten seasons of Chandler.

  • The proposal - the whole episode really, being intimidated by Richard but letting his love for Monica lead the way, and then trying to get through the proposal without crying - you trying watching it without crying!

  • The box - even though he’s not on screen and is actually in a box, I love these few episodes where he has such chemistry with Kathy but is torn by his loyalty to his best friend.

  • Learning to be in a relationship - with Monica as his guide, I love the moment where she is mad at him but then realises he’s not good at this, not ready to be an adult quite yet. “I didn’t think I was,” he says, so earnestly. Oh, love how this show flipped to be the Monica and Chandler story instead of Ross and Rachel.

  • Walking Phoebe down the aisle - a petty contest with Ross and he somehow loses but still manages to come out on top.

  • The last word - so right that he should have the final word.
