Plane sailing

This may be a tricky review to write because it’s hard to talk too much about the Apple TV series Hijack without giving away any spoilers. I’m not usually worried about spoilers one way or the other, but actually this series is really helped when you don’t know what’s going to happen next, or who you can trust.

The simple premise is a hijacking on a plane travelling back to the UK, and it’s told in a sort of real-time, where there are seven episodes covering the seven hour flight. We see the actions on on the plane, but also from the point of view of air traffic control, the government having to make tough decisions, and the families of passengers who can only watch and wait on the ground.

Idris Elba stars in the series and really helms it well, he’s obviously a huge star at this point but plays this very quietly and calmly. Our protagonist is a negotiator but he’s not a huge hero, he’s just a little bit braver than the rest of the pack and puts himself into danger a couple of times to try and move this hijacking on to a safe conclusion.

It’s a really intriguing and intense show that is a lot of fun to watch - but I have to admit, once an episode ended, I didn’t tend to think about it until the next one started. I don’t know if that’s a good thing or not? I was keen to watch, it was entertaining to view, but didn’t linger on my mind at all. I’m assuming it’s not the kind of show that will get a second series, so we can just enjoy what happened here as a limited series and look forward to the next Idris project.
