Prime position for new Tomb Raider
Published February 2, 2023
It feels like forever since there has been any news of Lara Croft and her tomb raiding business, so I was very happy to hear about a new TV show potentially in development for Amazon Prime. The names attached look good, particularly Phoebe Waller-Bridge who would be able to bring a great level of drama and humour that would fit very well with the character.
This new series and movie could end up as more big video game franchise adaptations for Amazon, which announced in December that it would be making a God of War TV show. But it also marks a further investment from Amazon into the Tomb Raider franchise, as the company will also be publishing the next Tomb Raider game from Crystal Dynamics.
I didn’t know Amazon were game publishers now too, but I hope this might help boost production of the game. It feels like it’s been in ’early development’ for a long time now. I can imagine making a game from scratch is a pretty huge undertaking, particularly as the makers are using Unreal Engine and effectively rebuilding everything. But it’s been four years since the last game and we’re still in the early stages. Boo.
That being said, I don’t necessarily have time to sit down and play a hugely long narrative game at the moment, whereas I do have time to watch a bit of TV when it arrives, so this move is very much appreciated. It’s also going to be fun if the two tie in to each other and we’re at the start of a Tomb Raider Universe, rather than all the disparate media that we’ve had previously. I wait with eager anticipation!
