Q1 movies - Life's a scream
Published January 4, 2023
Thanks to a Halloween binge and the inevitable Christmas slush-fest of films, we just about managed to watch 100+ movies last year. That’s always the aim, but it was a close run thing. There just haven’t been many that really grab attention, aside from the regularly scheduled Marvel and Star Wars releases. But it’s always worth keeping an eye on what else is coming up and these are the movies that are due to be released over the next three months that I’ll give a second glance.
January
- A Man Called Otto. I love, love, loved the book A Man Called Ove and have had the Swedish film adaptation on my list for a long time, but of course haven’t got round to it. It’s not a surprise that there’s a US adaptation and I’d be annoyed by it except, Tom Hanks. So instead, it’s a must watch.
February
- Magic Mike’s Last Dance. It’s incredible how huge the Magic Mike films were, spawning spin offs and theatre shows and goodness know’s what else. I don’t know if we need a third, presumably final, outing, but since when have these films ever been about need?
- Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. The title of this one is a bit of a mouthful, and I always sort of dread an Ant-Man movie, but they’re usually better than they sound. We’re firmly in the metaverse saga now so I am intrigued what this will add to the larger picture.
March
- Creed III. It was disappointing to read that Stallone won’t be involved in this because he didn’t like the direction the franchise was taking. If it’s a franchise that’s set for the long-term, then at some point there was always going to be a film without Rocky, and I’m sure it gives them a lot more creative freedom, but still… I’m pouting about it.
- Scream VI. March seems like the wrong time to release a movie like this, but I guess they couldn’t wait a few more months until Halloween. Probably by the time we get to see it, it’ll be nearer the witching hour anyway. The last Scream film was surprisingly good, so hopefully this one can continue that trend.
Aside from the new releases, I also want to make a concerted effort to watch some older films, as well as continuing the homework on musicals that I have previously not seen or heard. It’s going to be a good year!
