2012 Wk 18, Finding barriers and pushing past them

Two runs in a week, this is progress!

What I am finding now is that as the 10k program I’m working through gets harder, the runs get longer. Which is fine physically, because I am just about keeping up (if getting ridiculously slower as the distances get longer). It’s just timewise. I’ve said it before, but it’s tricky to justify more than an hour of running in an evening, unless I have an unusually free schedule.

So, I’m thinking I might have to do more of the “running for half an hour” thing, trying to fit the 10k classes in as and when I can.

This week, I managed two from the class, but I’m very disappointed that the average pace is now hovering around 9m, rather than pushing the 8:30 and faster barrier that I was at before. I know it is to be expected, but I don’t like it.

It was also very disheartening to be overtaken by a beautiful, blonde, thin runner who was doing a much better job than me. I wonder if I will ever be able to overtake anyone, ever.

I do think I’m starting to work towards getting my head around the mental barriers of it, though. Now that I have done 8k, when I’m faced with a 6k class, it doesn’t seem like too much. A few months ago, that would have been pushing to the limits. It’s slow progress (in every way!) but it does still feel like small steps of progress.

The other good thing I noticed recently is that occasionally, I’m hungry in the mornings. I’ve been forcing myself to stick to this awful three meals a day routine, and it’s still not fun. But, a few times recently, I’ve felt hungry when I have the breakfast. That’s probably a good sign.
