Two 5K runs, getting better and better
Published October 29, 2011
Two weeks into my new and sparse running routine, and somehow I am managing to run better than ever. I cannot explain this.
Last week, I was desperate to go out, I was feeling all cooped up and ready to run. I wasn’t 100% sure how far I was going to go when I first headed out, because it was the first run I’d done for a while, but eventually I knew I wasn’t doing a short, fast pace, I was going for distance. So, a 5K it was.
As I was running, I didn’t think I was doing that well, and I know I slowed down considerably in the middle. But… I found some pace at the end and after looking back through my activities I found this to be the best full 5K I’ve ever done!
I was listening to music, whereas I normally listen to spoken word, so I don’t know if that made a difference. Maybe, just maybe, that speed work I have been doing has actually had an effect!
Thus, we come to today’s effort. I wasn’t so keen on getting out there today. It’s been a crazy busy week and I’ve been absolutely exhausted throughout. However, once I got out of the door, I had a strange revelation. This was my one run of the week, and therefore it was something of a treat. I decided to push as much as I could.
And this was the result. A new fastest 5K ever! It felt really good as well, it was serious work and I was pushing hard but it went very quickly and I felt very satisfied after I’d done.
I so badly want to get just under 40 minutes, though. One day, when I hit that 39:59, I’m going to be so flippin’ happy.
