Simu Liu

Jackpot!

Jackpot!

The trailer for this didn’t look too bad, but I just couldn’t deal with the full length thing. It was silly, the premise didn’t make sense and wasn’t explained, it felt like Awkwafina was desperately trying to make it work but the desperation was clear. And she and John Cena felt like they were in different movies. We didn’t even get to Simu Liu being in it (assuming he’s more than just a billboard) so that tells you everything you need to know!

Atlas

I mean, really. There’s very little redeeming about this film, it’s derivative of everything you can think of, the visual effects are not the best, and despite what could be a fascinating concept, underneath it’s actually pretty dull. Jennifer Lopez does the best she can with some poor material, but Simu is underused massively, and, biased that I am, not in the film anywhere near enough. Hate to jump on the bandwagon of bad reviews, but this one is definitely best avoided.

Five star book report 2022

I read a lot last year, in all sorts of formats. Along with the poetry and comics that I was trying out for the first time, there were the regularly scheduled books, audiobooks, reference books, shorts and a great mix of genres through them all. I’ve noticed a few more physical books creeping into my life, mostly as gifts but occasionally because that just is the best format for reading something in. Digital is still my go-to though, if only because having a book on hand to dip into at any given moment is a big driver behind how I’ve managed to read so much.

We Were Dreamers by Simu Liu

The most important thing to say about this memoir is that it’s so well written, you not only want to hear more about Simu’s early life, you also go with him to dip back into the history of his parents as well. It’s not often that this kind of early autobiography grabs me like this one did, but it’s important and very moving. And then Simu’s story after that is also great - being stuck in a dead-end job, working his way through many, many acting jobs, and then, of course, landing that big gig at Marvel.

Five things about the Ten Rings

I’ll be honest with you here: yes, there were a couple of things I wanted to point towards on the subject of the recent Marvel movie Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. But the real reason for this post is an excuse to talk about Simu Liu, who I have become somewhat obsessed with ever since watching the film first time round. That’s the good thing about having a blog, no matter how much or little you post, you can spend lots and lots of time researching things that you’re interested in!

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

The length of the title of this film made me nervous, but I shouldn’t have been because it’s a top notch Marvel movie, and a great set of new characters to get on board with. I enjoyed it, and particularly liked the fact our main two protagonists were friends from start to finish. There were a few questions on some of the plot points but nothing so irritating to ruin the story.
