Randomly, we recently watched the Uncharted movie with Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg and it was entertaining enough for me to decide the game would be worth a look. Then surprise, surprise, at some point in the past I’d already purchased an Uncharted bundle of games. Thinking back, I remember playing one of them and thinking it had a bit too much story, bit too much talking, and abandoning it, but this time, I’m used to that now (all games are like that apparently), so let’s give it another go.
It’s in the Game
The game I had previously played was obviously not this first one in the series, as the start was not at all familiar. There was some story to get through but it was interesting enough and eventually landed our hero Nathan Drake in a jungle and a tomb solving puzzles, shooting guys and finding treasures. This sounds very much like Tomb Raider and therefore is right up my street!
The graphics are pretty good, considering how old this game is. It’s been remastered so that obviously helps, and the scenery is very atmospheric. I love that we ended up running through a German submarine that seemed to be teetering on a waterfall for some reason!
Really, my only complaint is the amount of shooting there is. I like the puzzles and the running and the jumping - trying to navigate around that fort via the handholds and jumps was a lot of fun. But then there was endless shooting and I’m just not very good at it. I get by, and I don’t mind giving it a couple of tries, but once I’ve died about six times, the patience is gone and I just want to move on. So it’s hit and miss from that point of view, but I’m not giving up, I will try again and get past the bad guys and see what else the jungle has to offer us.
Thoughts
Overall, I think this is a fun game, very reminiscent of Tomb Raider so it’s clearly not an original piece, but in some ways that works for me considering how much I love Ms Croft (who also has to kill lots of people, to be fair). I’m curious to keep playing and then see what some of the sequels in the bundle I bought are like. This isn’t new or groundbreaking, but it’s a solid game and can provide plenty of entertainment.
