I wasn’t aware of this game until I saw a random review pop up and, of course, it absolutely spoke to me. Any game that has a bookshop at its heart is going to be one I want to try! I got my hands on a new Switch 2 recently, and whilst I have been dipping into the Marios and more traditional Nintendo games, this has ended up being the first one that I’ve played long enough to know I needed to review it.
It’s in the Game
I think I’m still quite early in the game but the premise is wonderful - you run a small mobile bookshop in various locations around a cosy seaside village. Each day, you choose which books to fill your shelves with and then run through the day helping the customers. Some of them browse and buy on their own, some of them don’t find anything they want, and others require a helping hand.
This is where the game gets addictive - a customer will give you a sentence about what they want and you have to find a recommendation for them. Sometimes that’s super easy as they’re very specific about what they want, other times you have to think outside the box a little bit. And trust me, it’s genuinely a bit sad when they don’t like what you recommend, or you haven’t got anything that fits their needs.
I love playing this game, although there’s one downside in that it just makes me want to go and browse my own bookshelf and start reading through that instead. I’m not sure if that’s the aim of the game or not, but if it gets my To Read list down, I’m grateful!
Thoughts
It’s cosy and cute, the animation is nice, and ultimately it’s about fitting the right elements to the customer demands - a bit of a puzzle, a bit of strategy, and generally just plodding along a very simple and rewarding life. For the first few minutes, I thought this might have a possibility of being boring, but give it a few minutes and you get hooked. What else could you ask for?
