I’ve been aware of the Skate City games as they’ve been around a while and are something of a classic. But skateboarding isn’t necessarily something I’m that bothered about. I did enjoy watching it in the Olympics but it’s never shouted at me as a good gaming experience, as much as Tony Hawk might want it to. However, an Apple Arcade game is always a good opportunity to try something you might not otherwise, as there are no downsides!
It’s in the Game
It’s actually surprisingly good. I played it both on the iPad itself and then also with a controller, and it’s quite fun to skate along those recognisable city streets and perform tricks. I’m not sure I was particularly co-ordinated or made any good combos, but I did manage to pass quite a few of the challenges and scrape my way along those streets.
The game reminded me quite a lot of Mirror’s Edge which I used to love, that parkour runner where you slid and jumped your way around the city buildings. It’s similar in Skate City, where you use all the elements you are passing - benches, rails, fences, pavements, boardwalks - to go fast and earn trick points.
Thoughts
A good game that passes the time nicely, I think if it’s something you were really hooked on you could spend a good amount of time learning and perfecting the tricks, getting perfect scores and really dominating the city. It’s probably not something I’m going to dip back into very often but I do see the appeal and I’m glad to have played it!
