Following the classic Marvel mythology, X-MEN: FIRST CLASS charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga. Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were closest of friends, working together with other mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known.

3:43 It’s weird that Mystique can change size and shape. Never thought of a kid pretending to be an adult before.
8:12 Don’t give Magneto rage, for goodness sake!
11:16 It is the word. Mutant is not the best.
13:28 The blue is okay, but the yellow eyes are a bit scary.
15:10 Ou est-il? I love it when I can understand the French bits but it doesn’t happen often!
21:53 “We find an expert on mutation.”
22:42 Magneto speaks all the languages. I’m so jealous.
24:57 I love the boomerang knife.
29:16 Typing pool, tut.
31:19 I need that power. Queen’s nose, right?
34:40 I also want the boat with the submarine. I can’t decide which side I’m on!
43:00 I do get the little rumblings of excitement about what this partnership/rivalry can become.
45:36 Yay Cerebro!
49:23 “They’re recruiting.” Such a worrying phrase, no matter which side you’re on.
54:32 Coming up with nicknames must be the best part.
1:05:58 “Choose freely, but know that if you are not with us then, by definition, you are against us.” Harsh!
1:12:58 Never heard that definition of war before.
1:15:23 Xavier has a bunker too? I NEED THAT.
1:18:59 “You have the most beautiful cellular structure I’ve ever seen.” Compliment of the century.
1:26:30 Is he drinking.a martini? I swear this is a Bond audition for Fassbender.
1:41:05 “The point between rage and serenity.”
1:55:19 Why did Magneto suddenly go Irish? So weird.
2:04:34 “I prefer… Godzilla.”

Conclusions

What I liked about this one was the same thing I liked about Star Wars Episode III. As a prequel, you know where they’ve got to get to and so it’s tracking all the characters from their early beginnings and seeing what made them who they are today.

That part was fun. James McAvoy was great, and I liked the 1960s look of the piece. I was a bit disappointed in January Jones’s character, which was clearly plucked straight from an Austin Powers movie. The real enemy of the piece though was Fassbender. From impressing with his variety of languages at the beginning, he then absolutely confounded us with his sudden Irish accent. Fair enough he’s a mish-mash of everything, but to have such a strong accent for no apparent reason was bizarre. It really took me out of the whole piece.

So I liked it but also felt it let itself down in a few places that really could have been improved upon with better control and production.
