Conclusions
I loved this! Oddly, I wasn’t really hugely looking forward to it one way or the other, but I was invested almost instantly and loved every second of it. I think it probably works a lot better if you have played at least one but preferably both of the rebooted games, because there was so much in there that comes from the games, it was a joy to be reminded every step of the way.
I had my doubts about Alicia playing the kick-ass tomb raider, tiny as she is, but she was mega, and the iTunes extra that showed her training regime made me respect her even more for the effort and dedication put in to this role - it’s clear she loves the brand and loved making the movie!
The story stood up as well, although it felt just a little too close to Indiana Jones - there’s only so much you can do about that when it comes to raiding tombs and running about jungles and such-like, so I didn’t really hold that against it. Especially not when confronted with surprise moments like the grappling axe, and the Trinity voices plunging me right back to those late nights playing the game. Loved it.
