2:14 I hope I’m supposed to be identifying with the Hathaway character because I am.
5:30 Who would eat something oniony for breakfast before an interview?
8:25 I love the quiet-voiced manner, still terrifying.
10:29 “You got a job at a fashion interview, what is it, a phone interview?” Harsh from the boyfriend!
21:14 If this, and Ugly Betty, are anything to go by, it’s a wonder these places have cafeterias at all.
26:09 “Where’s that piece of paper I had in my hand yesterday morning?” I’d love an assistant that could help me with that.
32:30 Nigel is fun.
32:58 “Be serious, you are not trying. You are whining.”
38:11 Fine, but where do you learn the skills to do that? Is Nigel tutoring her?
49:52 I’d just write a new version myself.
58:23 “Florals, for spring, groundbreaking.
1:02:22 Apart from the not eating thing, the cheese diet sounds amazing.
1:05:56 Who even cares? It’s a birthday, as opposed to an amazing career opportunity.
1:12:21 You get knocked over by a car and find out you’re second assistant all in one morning.
1:15:18 Glamazon!
1:18:16 They’re allowed to go to Paris cos of fashion.
1:25:44 “I’m going to be able to come to Paris, and actually see Paris.”
1:38:22 Seriously, not everybody does want to be like that.

Conclusions

I’m surprised I haven’t seen this one before, it feels like it’s a film that’s part of the collective consciousness of the world, a piece of culture. And having now seen it, it’s also essentially an extended version of the first episode of Ugly Betty, which I loved.

It’s a good film, mostly because of the fascinating characters. The story itself is kinda predictable, but how the characters deal with their situations is interesting. Meryl Streep is brilliant in her cool calculating quietness, and Stanley Tucci is amazing at explaining why the world of fashion is important - he almost convinced me who couldn’t care less about clothes. Oh and we can’t forget Emily Blunt with all that eye makeup on!

Overall fun frolics, a film stacked full of great quotes and music, perhaps not a film that will change our lives but definitely a good one to add to the collection.
