Conclusions
I enjoyed this because I love a good disaster film but let’s all be honest - it’s not actually a great movie. It has all the elements necessary for the disaster genre - scientist being ignored, hero in search of his family, plucky kids doing their best to stay alive, and some relationship drama thrown in as well. There’s some incredible CGI in this one, you can really tell how the technology is marching forwards. From the skyscrapers wobbling, to the ripples in the earth, with some impressive physical stunts thrown in for good measure.
I was impressed when I saw the film comes in under two hours - not many of the recent disaster movies can claim such. However, it turns out they’ve actually cut some REALLY important details. Watching the deleted scenes later made so much more sense.
* Dude has basically stolen a helicopter and gone rogue!! Oh no wait, he called in and they were as fine as they could be about it.
* Scientist complains he's not being listened to but he didn't try and tell anyone!! Oh no wait, he did call the government after all.
I’m all for streamlining movies but they still need to make sense at the end of it. Solid but not spectacular, I’m sure I’ll watch it again, but it’s not one of the best.
