2:15 | That is such a Casualty start, what is going to get her… |
4:17 | “Just doing my job, maam.” |
9:44 | That tells us exactly what to expect - total nonsense but brilliantly dramatic at the same time. |
19:04 | It must be a filmmakers dream to blow up the Hoover dam like that. |
19:54 | Trust Ioan to be the smug new boyfriend. |
25:06 | I’d love a fishtank like that, but only if someone else had to look after it. |
26:38 | “We double checked.” “Then we re-set all the instruments and triple checked.” |
35:27 | He’s definitely improved on his shouting voice - now only a smidge Welsh. |
38:09 | Bye Kylie. That was brief. |
41:14 | She’s in high-heeled boots too. If I’ve learnt anything from this film, it’s always wear trainers. |
41:33 | Is auto-hover a thing in helicopters? |
48:33 | This Ben guy is my new favourite. Engineer genius. |
56:58 | As moving as this moment is, shouldn’t he be out saving people or something? |
1:14:28 | Well that was a Bond-esque one-liner. |
1:21:05 | Blake is getting more Lara by the minute, now a tank top and a walkie talkie in her belt. |
1:26:41 | Gotta say, I called the demise of the Golden Gate Bridge at least half an hour ago. Still brilliant though. |
1:34:11 | Sinking building is v. Titanic. |
1:39:00 | ROCK RAGE! |
1:46:42 | Big ol’ flag. No subtlety as per usual. |
Conclusions
I enjoyed this because I love a good disaster film but let’s all be honest - it’s not actually a great movie. It has all the elements necessary for the disaster genre - scientist being ignored, hero in search of his family, plucky kids doing their best to stay alive, and some relationship drama thrown in as well. There’s some incredible CGI in this one, you can really tell how the technology is marching forwards. From the skyscrapers wobbling, to the ripples in the earth, with some impressive physical stunts thrown in for good measure.
I was impressed when I saw the film comes in under two hours - not many of the recent disaster movies can claim such. However, it turns out they’ve actually cut some REALLY important details. Watching the deleted scenes later made so much more sense.
* Dude has basically stolen a helicopter and gone rogue!! Oh no wait, he called in and they were as fine as they could be about it.
* Scientist complains he's not being listened to but he didn't try and tell anyone!! Oh no wait, he did call the government after all.
I’m all for streamlining movies but they still need to make sense at the end of it. Solid but not spectacular, I’m sure I’ll watch it again, but it’s not one of the best.
