2:30 Elton Hercules?
6:58 Bryce looks so different without red hair.
11:34 His father is absolutely the worst.
21:26 This is a proper musical, can’t wait to see it in the west end.
24:33 “Write some songs,” he says, as though it’s that easy.
28:33 Bernie’s arrived. Dream team!
33:50 “You never know, one day you might have enough for an album.” Elton has more albums than anyone I’ve seen!
38:37 She threw the piano out the window!
43:47 “Buy yourself some new clothes, something flashy.” He’ll regret those words.
52:48 It’s such a 70s party. So brown.
56:10 “Where there was darkness, there is now you.”
1:05:50 “Lovely guy is not a job.”
1:12:18 Worst manager ever. You don’t punch the talent.
1:26:15 I knew Elton liked the crazy outfits, but I didn’t realise he was quite so panto.
1:34:25 Orange juice for breakfast… with added vodka.
1:37:54 Jesus Christ, his parents are scum.
1:47:44 “Actually, I think I’m okay with strange.”

It’s unfortunate that this came out around the same time as Bohemian Rhapsody because it’s impossible not to compare the two - but they’re different beasts really. Bohemian Rhapsody felt like the story of Freddie with some Queen songs thrown in. This was more of a crafted jukebox musical, dancing in the street, and the family doing an early group number.

I loved this movie, Taron does an absolutely stunning job and in some of the shots and outfits looks eerily like the man he’s trying to portray. It’s a hard story, and whilst it’s not 100% historically accurate, still contained things that I didn’t know. Elton got married?? Weird.

If the film manages anything, though, it’s to show what a nice guy Bernie Taupin is. I think we could all use some Bernie in our lives. Overall, great characters, an interesting story, fantastic songs obviously, so a top film. Now, as I mentioned in the notes above, just got to wait for it to transfer to the stage!
