A coming-of-age story, My Girl is an irresistible story of first love and loss. Vada Sultenfuss is a precocious 11-year-old tomboy obsessed with death. Her widowed father is the town mortician, who employes a sexy cosmetician. Thomas J., the boy next door idolises Vada. Their summer adventures from first kiss to last farewell which introduces Vada to the world of adolescence.

Thoughts
I’ve seen this before, maybe a couple of times, but not for many years. I hadn’t remembered that it was so sad, but it’s such a good afternoon-mood movie. It’s your lovely family comedy drama, a bit quirky in places, but perfect for being under the duvet with a cold (and definitely more in our style than The Revenant!)
Anna Chlumsky is brilliant from start to finish, she really grabs your attention with her hypochondria and bossiness and general excellent confidence that hides an underlying fear about death and the role she plays in her family. And with the rest of the cast doing an equally good job, there’s very little to complain about with this one. I didn’t know they had made a sequel and I’m curious to see how that one plays out!
