Conclusions
I’ve been looking forward to this one for a while, and it also came recommended to us from a family member as well, so that’s double the pressure for the film to do well. Bradley Cooper seems to be everywhere at the moment, but I was not aware of Abbie Cornish’s work.
Really enjoyed this film. The premise was good, the acting equally so. The camera work really made the difference - from the variety in colour to depict who was on what and when, to the moments where he was zooming through the streets, or helping himself put the sofa against the wall. The ending was a little ambiguous, which is always irritating, but it wasn’t as bad as some we’ve seen.

Revisited - February 2015
Since watching this for the first time I have read the book and also listened to the audiobook, and really enjoyed both. I figured re-watching the film would be interesting to see how it compared, although I knew the endings were significantly different.
A lot more of it was different to the source material, but that doesn’t deter from what was a marvellous film. The use of colour, as mentioned above, is exquisite. Shot placement is perfect and limited use of effects adds to the intensity of the piece.
I was surprised at how little Robert de Niro is in it, and Anna Friel as well. They are essentially bit part players in a film that is entirely about Bradley Cooper - his ability to go from on top of the world to crashing hard is amazing. Great film.
