Matthew McConaughey is Tripp, a 35 year-old who still lives with his parents. And who can blame him? It's free, he's got a great room, and mom (Kathy Bates) does the laundry. Desperate to get him out of the house, his parents hire a gorgeous woman, Paula (Sarah Jessica Parker), to give him a little... push. They just didn't expect Tripp would push back!

3:13 “Another one bites the dust and he is still here.”
5:09 You can see why he wouldn’t want to leave though, that’s a pretty cushy breakfast.
11:05 “Sometimes I eat on Saturdays.”
15:43 I can’t believe she cleans his bathroom.
20:59 I so relate to the fury of listening to bird song and no one else understanding why.
24:33 “I don’t want to feel the wind, I want to make the wind.”
26:49 Ugh, paintballing.
35:38 I have so much affinity with Kit. I want a movie about her.
44:17 Not a fan of just being able to go up and buy a random gun.
50:09 “He’s endearing and quirky.” I mean, he really is.
53:27 This is genuinely the greatest subplot to any film ever. I barely care about the main two.
59:04 Professional interventionist.
1:07:45 Mums always know.
1:11:23 “Your life is fundamentally at odds with the natural world. Mother Nature rejects you.”
1:17:47 Loving the people she’s gathered as her focus group.
1:24:52 A whole wall as a screen in a cafe is awesome.
1:27:32 “Do you want to spend the rest of your life having fun or do you want to spend it with me?”

Thoughts

I thought this was going to be a straight up rom-com but actually it had a few extra layers and surprises that I really wasn’t expecting. Firstly, it became very clear that the Zooey Deschanel character and subplot was far more interesting than the main one. I didn’t quite understand what was going on with Matthew M being harrassed by wildlife quite so much, it was a weird add-on to the plot.

But ultimately it was funny with a great cast, and better than I’d anticipated!
