On November 4, 1979, as the Iranian revolution reaches its boiling point, militants storm the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, taking 52 Americans hostage. But, in the midst of the chaos, six Americans manage to slip away and find refuge in the home of Canadian Ambassador Ken Taylor. Knowing it is only a matter of time before the six are found out and likely killed, the Canadian and American governments ask the CIA to intervene. The CIA turns to their top 'exfiltration' specialist, Tony Mendez, to come up with a plan to get the six Americans safely out of the country. A plan so incredible, it could only happen in the movies.

Time Comment
1:02 Oh god, when films start with a history of the political situation… I worry.
3:37 There was a subtle but noticeable change between footage and film there.
7:04 The soldiers didn’t understand the concept of “last resort”.
13:33 Beardy Ben.
17:34 They have intelligence the people can ride bikes… is bike riding not a common thing in the 1970s?
20:36 Reassembling shredding is like needle in the haystack stuff.
26:10 Ahh, John Goodman waltzes in to steal the show.
28:20 “You can teach a Resus monkey to direct in a day.”
32:10 It’s hard to believe this is a true story. Such a random idea.
39:58 Blue Chewbacca.
44:10 “You don’t have a better bad idea than this?”
46:28 One of the words on his postcard just moved. Two takes much.
58:36 “What, is this the part where we say it’s so crazy it might actually work?”
1:10:47 Ooh, retro polaroid.
1:12:21 This guy is very irate about a single polaroid. He would not be a fan of Google Glass.
1:19:12 If he doesn’t go rogue, I will eat my hat.
1:26:36 Jeez… that was a parrot.
1:33:48 I see, it comes down to the one who didn’t really believe in it to save them.
1:38:59 This is ridiculously stressful.
1:42:59 The people around them must be wondering how exciting alcoholic beverages can really be.
1:48:02 Clandestine is a great word.

Conclusions

This is a bit of an odd one, as we heard about it a long time ago and possibly avoided the trailer so as not to see any spoilers. We rented it once but just clean ran out of time so were keen to get it again before it disappeared off some kind of distribution window. I wasn’t completely sure I was in the mood for this film, but eventually we had to just hit play.

As mentioned above, a film that starts with a lengthy explanation about the political situation with many different sides to the same argument is going to confuse me. I’m stupid like that. There were a few bits and pieces that I had to ask Mr C about but overall, the film wasn’t so much about that as the tense situation everyone involved was in. That bit I understood without question. The scene in the airport was like that Mission Impossible scene, you’re just holding your breath the entire time. Good film, I wasn’t sure I believed it all the way it was told, but there was plenty of seventies hair and glasses to distract me.
