Thoughts

After failing to finish my last book, I wanted to read something quick, easy and familiar. This children’s book is one of my very favourites. A precursor to the world of Harry Potter, The Worst Witch looks at a castle of young witches being educated in the ways of the magical world. There’s no major danger like there is in HP, so it’s just a nice way to revel in the idea of being taught how to be a witch.

Mildred, being pretty rubbish despite her efforts, is an absolutely relatable protagonist, and although she lucks into saving the day, the fact she always does the right thing means she deserves the praise she gets at the end. All the characters are strong - tall and thin Mildred against tubby and bespectacled Maud, with the snooty Ethel watching on from the sidelines.

It’s not a surprise that The Worst Witch spawned many sequel books, as well as TV adaptations galore.
