Book info

  • Title Ozma of Oz

Ozma of Oz was published in 1907 as the third book of L. Frank Baum's Oz series. It was the first in which Baum clearly intended creating a series of Oz books. Most of the action takes place outside of the Land of Oz. Only the final two chapters take place in Oz itself. Dorothy again finds herself in the Emerald City with a desire to return home.

Thoughts

I think this is my favourite of the Oz series so far, it has so many interesting ideas in there - the moving carpet to cross the desert, the princess with a selection of heads to choose from, the ornament guessing game, and of course the Wheelers. I think I had a picture book that combined the previous adventures with Jack Pumpkinhead with this one, and I remember the Wheelers being absolutely terrifying.

This time round, they’re not so much, and them crumbling under the realisation that they aren’t that scary was quite fun to read!

A great book, fun and redeeming, with characters getting their comeuppance wherever necessary. Also there’s a haughty talking chicken. What’s not to like?
