Is it morally wrong to have a blow-dry when one of your children has head lice? Is technology now the fifth element? Or is that wood? Is sleeping with someone after 2 dates and 6 weeks of texting the same as getting married after 2 meetings and 6 months of letter writing in Jane Austen's day? Pondering these, and other modern dilemmas, Bridget Jones stumbles through the challenges of single-motherhood, tweeting, texting and redisovering her sexuality in what SOME people rudely and outdatedly call 'middle age'.
Thoughts
It took me a while to get fully on board with the Bridget Jones character, I can relate to plenty of her self-conscious spiralling, but not always with the obsessive relationships about men. I was surprised that a new book came out, given the gap since the last ones, but I knew I wanted to see how it all worked out.
Of course, the most important spoiler was revealed ahead of time and made big news quite quickly, but I think it was really cleverly written. I connected with Bridget a lot more this time, felt more keenly her emotions, and whilst I don’t know what it’s like to be overrun with family duties, I was totally on board with the overwhelming exhaustion that comes with modern life.
In the end, I thought it was a really good read and whilst the outcome was signalled along the way and became increasingly obvious, it was a great journey to get there.
