Pay attention to The Girlfriend

I’m deep in watching Wimbledon at the moment, so TV has taken a back seat but before that I’d watched a few good things that are worth a mention. The Prime Video series The Girlfriend was an eye-opening experience. Reviews have been mixed for that show, but I really liked it.
The concept is an over-protective mother of a young guy, and his new social climber girlfriend butting heads over and over again until it has devastating consequences. Not a new idea, sure, and it has its problems, but I just loved the way it was told this time.
Each episode broadly features the same events told twice, once from the point of view of the mother and once from the point of view of The Girlfriend, and I just loved how they differed. At first the differences were subtle, a slight tone difference or a slight change in the language used, but generally nothing to raise more than an eyebrow. But as their conflict grew, the differences in how these two characters perceived the same events also grew in number and seriousness. It was brilliantly done.
There are problems with the series. The guy is a weed who only needs to stand his ground a little bit more to have stopped any of these problems happening. The mother clearly has an unhealthy relationship with her son, and it’s deeply unsettling to watch. The way this ramps up and up and the ending are a bit unbelievable and the thriller aspect is hit or miss, but as I say, it’s the style I enjoyed here rather than specifically the substance.
If you have Prime, it’s worth a watch, as long as you keep your expectations in check and just enjoy the weird but clever journey.
