Making decisions with a genius

When I was learning how to code, one of the problems I had was no specific idea for an app to create. A vague idea cropped up since then but having done absolutely nothing about it, I’m glad to see that Apple have done the hard work for me. Their new feature Genius Browse is an interactive feature to help you pick what to watch next.

We have a ridiculously long list of films to watch and choosing which one is the right one for an evening can be really difficult. I’d thought an app might be able to help with a flowchart of questions to guide you to a choice. Old film or new film. Comedy or horror. Featuring Tom Hanks or Dame Judi Dench. Eventually you’d work down to some options and hopefully might have narrowed down the selection enough to make a choice.

Genius Browse is basically that - although it’s really hard to find in the first place. Scroll down and down and down on the Apple TV and you find the Genius Browse section. Start with a choice like Thrilling Blockbusters or Based on a Book, and then as you scroll down, each selection you make creates the next row based on that choice.

It works for films and TV, and sometimes presents you with a row of other titles, you may or may not have seen them before. That can create a list of similar titles. Or it might present you with an actor, like the Tom Hanks question, and the next row would be things that he has been in. It will keep on going and refining until you finally find something you’re interested in.

We used it yesterday to choose The Sweetest Thing. Starting with Good for a Pick-Me-Up, navigating through all the many, many romantic comedies we’ve already watched, and landing on that great film. The fact that it all integrates with Apple TV is great too, find the film or TV you want to watch and within a couple of clicks, you’re away. I feel like this is going to be a really useful feature going forward, but now it does mean I need to come up with another idea for my app.
