The red sofa reunion

If I hadn’t just watched Domhnall Gleeson in The Paper, I think the new Taylor Swift music video would have passed me by. But I spotted Gleeson standing next to Swift in a promo shot from the video, and was instantly intrigued. The six minute video was released on Apple Music and Spotify only, so my searching endlessly on YouTube wasn’t a good start, but once I found it, I was entranced.
It’s for Swift’s latest single Opalite, one of the better songs from the recent album, and tells an intricate story about two lonely people finding each other and falling in love thanks to some kind of miracle spray. The real joy of it is its 90s setting, plenty of nostalgia in there to enjoy.
Domhnall Gleeson isn’t the only star that makes an appearance, and as you start seeing the famous faces, it feels familiar. And then Graham Norton rocks up and things really start to fall into place. This is all the people that were on the red sofa with Taylor Swift when she was promoting the album. Cillian Murphy, Lewis Capaldi, Greta Lee and Jodie Turner Smith also pop up as if they’re having some kind of school reunion from that one Graham Norton show.
On the sofa, Gleeson joked about wanting to appear in one of Taylor’s music videos, and my favourite thing about this whole bizarre scenario is that you can see the moment, the actual split second that this idea hits Swift. She’s said the idea came to her instantly, and you can pinpoint that specific instant. She goes from a shocked face to a thoughtful face and it’s a great moment to see in hindsight.
