Strictly Come Dancing glitterball

Musicals week, the final theme before the final and oh, it’s always a good one. This time, there was a big opening number where each of the couples took a turn in the spotlight. It was so much dancing before the proper competition had even begun - where they just bored this week or what? I loved it though, a great medley!

George & Alexis - Argentine Tango (Phantom of the Opera)

I feel like this was really difficult music to dance to, but George did an incredible job. There’s no way he could have done this a few weeks ago, before the serious side of him came to the fore. It was really good, some tiny wobbles, but very impressive.

Karen & Carlos - Samba (Sweet Charity)

The 70s is not my favourite era, and samba can be a hit and miss dance, so this was a concern. But of course Karen put her all into it, it was a performance and a half! It may not have been to my tastes, really, and there were a few visible technique problems, but Karen is still legendary.

Balvinder & Julian - Viennese Waltz (The Greatest Showman)

A good dance, a great song, and it seems like she cracked that rotation she was working so hard for. I don’t feel like the performance was on the same level as the other two, but everyone else seemed to disagree. Can’t fault her fortitude though, next level strength.

Amber & Nikita - Charleston (Guys and Dolls)

I loved this, it was so fun and a great Charleston. Her swivel was super impressive. But, of course, this was entirely in her wheelhouse. Shirley said she was “destined for the West End” but she’s been working there already, so this really was just watching someone do their day job.

Lewis & Katya - Salsa (West Side Story)

This was well executed, but I didn’t find it that enjoyable to watch. I kept losing track of where Lewis was, and that lift thing in the middle was more circus than dance. The judges were really brutal but then scored pretty high.

It was such a close leaderboard this week, with three couples on the same score, so it really could be anybody. I suspected that people might vote for Balvinder as the underdog, but I was very worried about Karen.

Amber & Nikita 40
George & Alexis 35
Balvinder & Julian 35
Lewis & Katya 35
Karen & Carlos 34

So I, like many people, was shocked by the bottom two - Amber and Lewis had to dance off, and the judges voted to save Amber (they kind of had to given their relative reactions to the dance). Lewis went home! I was sure he would make it to the final. It also throws things wide open for next week as well, who’s going to make it through the semi-finals?
