I predict a riot

If you haven’t already started (and finished!) watching Riot Women on the BBC, then you must stop what you’re doing and do that instead. It’s absolutely brilliant TV. Of course, the elements are all there to make it magical - the cream of the crop of British female actors (of a certain age), the writing skills of Sally Wainwright, the gorgeous Yorkshire backdrop, and a story about these women putting a rock band together. The music is provided by ARXX and it’s all entirely credible and in some cases brilliant.
What else do you need to know?
It starts off quite difficult, with a scene that deals with suicide. You need to know that from the off because even though you might think this is a gentle Sunday night kind of family drama, it is none of those things.
This is a show that is rooted in mental health and female empowerment, and with several of the lead characters struggling in different ways. It’s also about aging and dealing with family as the dynamics evolve over the years. It’s about believing in yourself even when no one else will, trusting that you can do something even if the amount of time you have to practice is limited… but also that sticking with something and putting those hours in can and will make a difference.
There are a variety of different storylines in play here, and considering there are only six hour-long episodes, they pack quite a lot in - adoption, adultery, misogyny in the workplace, aging parents, menopause, retirement, and that’s before you even get to the difficulties of forming a band and keeping it together!
Joanna Scanlan and Rosalie Craig are sort of the leads of the ensemble but there’s no weak link in the chain. Tamsin Greig is wonderful, as I have always thought, but even the slightly more minor characters played by Claire Skinner or Anne Reid are done so well.
I don’t want to say too much more for fear of spoiling it but I absolutely loved this show right from the first episode and it never disappointed for one single second. There’s been no confirmation of a second series yet but I’ve got all my fingers crossed that it happens because I want more from these Riot Women!
