A parents' evening you want to attend

If you said getting a handful of celebrities and their parents and asking them questions in a quiz show, you wouldn’t think it would make a particularly good television show. But throw in the twist that the parents have to decide whether they think their child knows the answers or not, plus the joy of Romesh Ranganathan and his mother hosting, and you’ve got a hit.
I stumbled across Romesh Ranganathan’s Parent’s Evening during the first series, completely by accident, after a couple of gins, and loved it. I wasn’t sure though, if it was the alcohol or the particular mix of celebrities that made it such a treat, and so had to tune in for the next episode just to make sure.
Turns out, the whole thing is brilliant - a recent episode featured no one I knew, and was still entertaining from start to finish. The parents have to bid on how many items on a particular subject their child will be able to answer, and you wouldn’t believe how little parents actually know about their children. It’s amazing.
Alongside that, you have the interactions between Romesh and his mum, Shanthi, which add to the spectacle. I know Romesh has made programmes with his mother before but I’ve never seen any, and now I’m thinking I might have to try and find some. His unadulterated frustration is a lot of fun.
And with all that layered on top of a quiz that is actually quite good to shout answers out at the screen, then you’ve got a really great late-night Saturday watch. The second series has just finished but I hope they can make another. It’s just a matter of convincing kids to go on TV with their oh-so-embarrassing parents.
