The dynamic duo

Last week, Tess and Claudia surprised Strictly Come Dancing fans and the rest of the world by announcing this series would be their last. It was shocking, obviously, because they are part of the fabric of the show, and also because it came out of nowhere - I hadn’t heard any serious rumblings of them leaving and no one had leaked the announcement before it happened. Instead it was just a simple video released by the pair confirming their intentions.
Naturally, speculation went into overdrive about who might be on the list to replace them. I don’t know there’s much point in gossiping about it because it’s almost entirely impossible to know who can step into their glittery shoes. All I will say is that with no disrespect to Tess, I think Claudia is going to be the hardest to replace.
Tess does excellent work with the links to cameras and introducing the couples, holding their hands while they get feedback from the judges and pointing them towards the stairs. But Claudia has the more unpredictable situations to deal with, and she always takes everything in her hilarious stride. It really won’t be the same without her.
The pair were groundbreaking when they took the helm as the first female duo to present such a high profile show. You have to wonder whether the BBC will want to continue that narrative, and also whether they’ll promote from within (Claudia came from It Takes Two - Janette or Fleur may be under discussion). But we’ll know one way or the other in due course, and in the meantime we just need to spend the next couple of months enjoying the status quo.
With Tess’ dependability, and Claudia’s wry control of any situation, we’ve been very lucky to have this dynamic duo helming our winter treat. Claudia will no doubt go on to do many other things, she already has lots of irons in the fire, and there’s talk of a chat show. I don’t know what Tess does outside of Strictly, but she’ll have some free time coming up soon to do as she pleases. When that final Keeeeep Dancing is said, there won’t be a dry eye in the house.
