Remembering Last Christmas

Wham! Last Christmas Unwrapped is an unwieldy title for a one-off TV episode that was mesmerising, surprising and joyful from start to finish. The hour long show manages to pack in a brief history of Wham the band, before and after, as well as the history of the song Last Christmas, the rivalry with Band Aid, and remembering George after his death in 2016. A lot, you might think, but somehow it never felt rushed or missing a beat, it was almost perfect.

The remaining members of Wham (and yes, you might think that’s just Andrew Ridgely, as I do, but actually seems to be a wide collection of friends and relatives) reunite on the very mountain where the video for Last Christmas was filmed and remember what good times they had making it… recreating snowball fights and spilling the beans on how drunk certain band members were at the time.

I had never really paid that much attention to the video before, other than recognising it for the gang tramping through the snow and George Michael slipping over a couple of times. But the story it is actually telling was so surprising to me. This woman chose Andrew over George, and not only that, gave him the brooch that was a gift from George right in front of his face. So brutal! It’s a wonder she was invited back for the reunion, it really was.

I also didn’t know that George, who has been revealed postumously to be an incredibly generous soul, donated the profits from Last Christmas to Band Aid as well. So not only did he lose out on the coveted Christmas number one spot (after making the song better, too) but gave everything from two singles he was involved in to the cause. THIS GUY.

So much to learn from Last Christmas Unwrapped, so much to love, and really just a celebration of a great life and a well-earned number one, despite it coming almost 40 years after the first release. Beautiful work.
